The Flame-Retardant Chemistry in Your Cafeteria Soda: A Student's Guide to BVO

In 2012, a 15-year-old in Mississippi named Sarah Kavanagh turned her bottle of Gatorade around and read an ingredient she couldn't pronounce: brominated vegetable oil. She looked it up and found it was tied to the same chemistry used in some flame retardants. So she did what a lot of frustrated teenagers do, except she followed through. She started an online petition.

Within months it had hundreds of thousands of signatures, and PepsiCo agreed to pull the ingredient from Gatorade. Twelve years later, in 2024, the FDA finally caught up and revoked its decades-old approval of brominated vegetable oil, or BVO, in food entirely. Here's what BVO is, why it hung around so long, and what its ban means for the drinks sitting in your cafeteria cooler.

What BVO Actually Did

Brominated vegetable oil is exactly what it sounds like: vegetable oil that has been chemically modified by adding bromine. That bromine makes the oil heavier, and that weight is the whole point. In citrus-flavored sodas and fruit drinks, the flavoring oils naturally want to float to the top. BVO kept them evenly spread so your last sip looked and tasted like your first.

In other words, BVO was never in your drink for nutrition or for a flavor you could taste. It was a texture trick, a way to keep the color and flavor from separating during weeks of shipping and sitting on a shelf. It showed up in citrus sodas like some versions of Mountain Dew and Sun Drop, and in a range of off-brand fruit punches.

The Flame-Retardant Connection

The "brominated" part is where people started paying attention. Bromine is the same element used in a class of flame retardants, and that alone is enough to make you look twice at your soda. To be clear, drinking a fruit punch is not the same as drinking a flame retardant. But bromine has a habit of building up in body tissue over time instead of passing through, and that is what worried scientists.

Studies run by the FDA together with the National Institutes of Health found that BVO can accumulate in the body and interfere with the thyroid. The thyroid is the small gland in your neck that makes the hormones controlling metabolism, energy, growth, and development. For kids and teenagers who are still growing, anything that disrupts thyroid function is a bigger deal than it would be for a fully grown adult.

Why It Took Fifty Years

BVO spent decades in a strange legal gray zone. Back in 1970 the FDA pulled it from the list of ingredients "generally recognized as safe" and allowed it only on an interim basis while more studies were done. That interim status then quietly lasted about fifty years. Meanwhile the European Union, Japan, and India had already banned or tightly restricted it.

The turning point came from newer research. A 2022 FDA and NIH study confirmed the thyroid effects in a way older data couldn't, and the agency moved. The FDA published its final rule revoking BVO's authorization on July 3, 2024, it took effect on August 2, 2024, and companies were given until August 2, 2025 to reformulate and clear out old inventory. California had already jumped ahead, banning BVO in its 2023 Food Safety Act, known as AB 418, alongside Red 3 and a couple of other additives.

What This Means for Your Cafeteria

Here's the good news: most major brands dropped BVO years ago under public pressure, so you're unlikely to find it in a name-brand soda today. Gatorade removed it back in 2013, and PepsiCo cleared it from its full lineup by 2020. The ingredient's real hiding spots now are off-brand, imported, or older fruit-flavored drinks and sodas, the kind that sometimes end up in vending machines and a la carte lines.

Checking is simple. Flip the bottle over and read the ingredient list for "brominated vegetable oil" or "BVO." As of August 2025 that ingredient is no longer legal in drinks made or sold in the United States, so if you spot it, you're looking at expired stock or a non-compliant product your school shouldn't be selling. That's worth a quiet word to whoever runs food service.

The Lesson Worth Keeping

The BVO story isn't really about one chemical. It's about how long a questionable ingredient can sit on shelves once it's been approved, and how much effort it takes to finally get it off. Fifty years of "interim" status ended in part because a teenager read a label she didn't understand and refused to accept that this was simply how things had always been.
